Home for the Holidays

Everybody has a different ways of celebrating holidays with friends and family. For many of us, our holidays are defined and remembered by the great times we’ve had with the ones we love. Special traditions, decorations and family meals all come to mind during this special time of year.

When a patient has a serious illness, the holidays can be a stressful time, especially for those who care for them. When that patient has a poor prognosis, time spent with family can take on a sense of urgency and those moments take on new priority. I could go on and on about the medical care a patient receives from hospice, but patients and families often choose hospice because it allows them to make the most of the time that remains.

This month, Community Hospice is a team focused on getting our patients home for the holidays. We see patients every day who don’t want to spend the life they have left in and out of the hospital. Our team offers them the chance to go home and spend their days any way they wish. Patients are happier in the familiar surroundings of home around the people they love. They can come and go as they please. Our job is to make them comfortable and to support them in a way that gives them the freedom they need.

As the holidays approach, it is important for caregivers, patients and their families to know that there are resources available. Hospice is one of those resources. If a patient wants to be home for the holidays, we give them that option.

We often use the phrase, “Hospice is about living.” People hear it so much that they probably don’t notice the message. When I hear stories about patients whose only goal is to make it through one more Christmas, that message becomes clearer. Our mission also becomes clear. We can keep families together and take the stress off of caregivers so that they can be a son, daughter, husband or wife.

What better time for that mission than the holidays? From everyone at Community Hospice, we wish you and your family a merry holiday season.
